Oman Wind Farm Secures $130 Million Funding as Country Accelerates Renewable Energy Expansion

The Oman wind farm project has secured funding as the country expands renewable energy capacity. The $130 million development will support Oman’s clean energy ambitions.

A French-Omani consortium will develop the 120-megawatt wind project in northeastern Oman. The development will help diversify the country’s electricity generation mix.

The consortium includes EDF Power Solutions, Al Khadra Partners, and OQ Alternative Energy. OQ Alternative Energy operates as part of state-backed energy group OQ.

The project will carry an estimated investment of OMR50 million. Construction and development plans remain focused on bringing the facility online in 2027.

The Jaalan Bani Bu Ali project sits about 440 kilometres from the Port of Duqm. Its location offers strong potential for large-scale renewable power generation.

The developers expect commercial operations to begin during the third quarter of 2027. Once operational, the facility should provide electricity for more than 13,500 households.

Furthermore, the project could prevent more than 270,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. That reduction would support Oman’s broader environmental objectives.

The development also represents another step toward reducing the country’s reliance on natural gas. Oman currently depends heavily on gas-fired generation for electricity production.

However, authorities continue expanding renewable alternatives across the national energy system. Wind and solar projects form a central part of that transition.

The consortium previously agreed to a 20-year power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company. That agreement secured a long-term framework for electricity generated by the project.

Nama Power and Water Procurement Company manages electricity procurement for government-backed projects. Its involvement provides an important foundation for large renewable developments.

Meanwhile, Oman has established ambitious targets for renewable energy expansion. The country aims to achieve net-zero emissions from gas by 2050.

Oman also wants renewable sources to provide 30 percent of its electricity by 2030. The country plans to increase clean energy capacity further during the following decades.

By 2050, Oman aims to reach 100 percent clean energy capacity. Therefore, new wind projects could play an increasingly important role.

The country also plans to expand its solar generation portfolio. Officials expect six solar facilities to reach a combined capacity of six gigawatts.

These projects could come online during 2030 and 2031. Consequently, solar power will complement the country’s growing wind generation capacity.

Nama’s project pipeline through 2030-31 includes numerous renewable energy developments. The portfolio features 24 solar and wind projects.

The pipeline also includes a waste-to-energy development. Together, these projects demonstrate the scale of Oman’s planned energy transition.

The latest wind project also highlights growing cooperation between international and Omani energy companies. Such partnerships can provide financing, technical expertise, and development capabilities.

Moreover, renewable projects can strengthen Oman’s energy security over the longer term. They can also reduce exposure to changes in natural gas demand and prices.

The government continues attracting international partners for major clean energy developments. These partnerships support infrastructure investment while advancing national sustainability goals.

Another major solar project also illustrates the country’s expanding renewable pipeline. A consortium involving OQ Alternative Energy, Masdar, and South Korea’s Midland Power selected an EPC contractor.

The 500-megawatt Ibri III solar project will rise in northwestern Oman. The development will add further renewable capacity to the country’s electricity system.

Together, these projects show how Oman is building a broader clean energy portfolio. Wind and solar developments will likely remain central to that strategy.

For the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali development, the next major milestone involves construction and project implementation. Commercial operations remain scheduled for the third quarter of 2027.

Once completed, the Oman wind farm should deliver clean electricity to thousands of households. It should also make a measurable contribution to emissions reduction.

The project therefore combines energy diversification with environmental objectives. At the same time, it strengthens Oman’s growing position in regional renewable energy development.

As more projects move forward, Oman could steadily reduce its dependence on conventional power generation. The expansion also supports the country’s long-term clean energy ambitions.
