UAE innovation has reached a new milestone after the country entered the world’s top 25 economies. The UAE climbed five positions to 25th among 139 economies in the 2026 Global Innovation Index. This marks the first time the country has secured a place among the world’s 25 leading innovation economies. The improvement also highlights stronger performance across entrepreneurship, technology, research and business development.
The UAE ranked 30th in the previous edition, making this year’s five-place rise particularly significant. The country also secured the top global position across four important innovation indicators. These areas included entrepreneurship policies and business culture, international student attraction, and startup funding. The UAE also ranked first for new investment in research, development and advanced technologies.
The 2026 index evaluates innovation performance across 139 economies worldwide. This year’s assessment places strong attention on entrepreneurs working in advanced science and technology. It also examines how countries can turn scientific discoveries into businesses with wider economic benefits. Areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, semiconductors, advanced materials and clean energy received particular attention.
The UAE performed above the average for high-income economies across five major innovation pillars. These included institutions, human capital and infrastructure, which support long-term economic development. Furthermore, the country exceeded the regional average across all seven pillars measured by the index. This broad performance helped strengthen its overall position and supported its rise in the global rankings.
The country’s progress also reflects its wider focus on building a technology-driven economy. Government policies have encouraged entrepreneurs, investors and international companies to develop new projects within the UAE. At the same time, increased investment in advanced technologies has supported research and commercial development. These efforts have helped create an environment that connects innovation with wider economic activity.
The UAE placed among the world’s eight strongest economies across six individual indicators. It ranked first globally for higher education and second for its business environment. The country also placed fifth for general infrastructure and knowledge absorption. In addition, it ranked seventh for information and communication technology and eighth for credit.
The UAE also improved its overall innovation inputs during the latest assessment. It ranked 12th globally for the Innovation Input Index, gaining two positions from the previous year. Meanwhile, the country climbed five places for its Innovation Output performance. These movements suggest that stronger resources and capabilities are increasingly producing measurable results.
UAE innovation also showed strong results in creative and technology-related activities. The country ranked sixth worldwide for the value of its leading brands. It placed seventh for mobile application creation and ninth for creative goods exports. Furthermore, it ranked 13th for high-tech exports and 19th for intellectual property receipts.
The value of UAE-based brands also increased during 2026. The country’s brands among the world’s 5,000 largest reached an estimated $101.66 billion. That figure represents a 15% increase compared with the previous year. The growth points to stronger international recognition for companies operating from the UAE.
Mobile applications also contributed to the country’s expanding digital economy. UAE-based developers and companies recorded about 2.91 billion global app downloads during 2025. Downloads increased by approximately 9.81% compared with the previous year. This growth demonstrates the expanding international reach of locally developed digital products and services.
High-tech exports delivered another strong result for the UAE economy. The country recorded approximately $68.05 billion in high-tech exports during 2024. That figure represented a 36.35% increase from the previous year. Therefore, technology-related trade has become another important part of the country’s broader innovation strategy.
UAE innovation now extends across education, finance, technology, research and creative industries. The country’s latest ranking shows progress across both innovation inputs and measurable outputs. Moreover, strong results in entrepreneurship and startup funding could support further growth. The UAE’s continued investment in advanced sectors may also strengthen its global position in future rankings.
The latest results support the country’s long-term economic plans and technology ambitions. They also show how investment in people, infrastructure and research can strengthen economic competitiveness. As a result, the UAE enters the global top 25 with momentum across several innovation sectors. Its next challenge will involve maintaining this progress while converting new ideas into sustainable businesses and economic opportunities.
