Bahrain has welcomed a new innovation that could improve stored water safety across homes and businesses. UV Water has become the focus of a newly launched purification device created by a Bahrain-based startup. The technology aims to reduce harmful bacteria inside storage tanks while helping users maintain cleaner water for daily use.
Candela ME Consultancy WLL developed the new purification system alongside its parent company, Candela Research Centre Pvt Ltd in India. The team designed the device to disinfect stored water through ultraviolet technology instead of relying mainly on chemical treatments. As a result, the system offers an alternative approach for maintaining water quality throughout storage.
The invention came from Bahrain-based engineer Nikhil Somanadhan, who spent six years refining the concept. During the early stages, he experimented with a water turbine model before moving toward an LED-powered design. However, those prototypes produced limited results. Consequently, he continued testing different technologies until achieving a more reliable solution.
Operations specialist Prince Jose and technical production expert Aji Kumar supported the project throughout its development. Both professionals live and work in Bahrain and contributed their expertise during the research and production process. Their shared interest in technology helped strengthen the project’s progress.
The completed system works inside water storage tanks through a specially designed underwater UV reactor. It continuously circulates stored water through a UV-C treatment chamber. Therefore, the process helps maintain microbiological water quality before consumers use the water.
Laboratory testing produced encouraging results for the new technology. Water samples showed a 98.5 percent reduction in bacteria after treatment with the purification device. These findings highlighted the system’s ability to improve stored water quality under testing conditions.
According to the inventor, extensive testing during the past two years helped the team identify the best components for the reactor. Engineers evaluated different ultraviolet bulbs and several equipment configurations before reaching the final design. They now plan to secure patent protection for the innovation.
Stored water often faces contamination risks after municipal treatment ends. Although public water supplies receive disinfection before distribution, chlorine levels naturally decline during storage. Consequently, rooftop and underground tanks may become favorable environments for bacterial growth, especially when owners delay regular maintenance.
The new purification system addresses that challenge by continuously treating stored water several times each day. Furthermore, the device reduces dependence on remaining chlorine while extending the time between cleaning schedules. Users can connect it to standard electricity or operate it with solar power, making installation more flexible and environmentally friendly.
Engineers also designed the unit as a compact plug-and-play solution. Therefore, property owners can install it without major modifications. The technology suits villas, apartment buildings, hospitals, schools, hotels, commercial facilities, and industrial sites.
The development team tested the system for two years at a local industrial facility before introducing it to the market. During that period, the device consistently delivered positive performance. In addition, several companies expressed interest after reviewing the technology and its capabilities.
Somanadhan has lived in Bahrain since 2004 and built a career in industrial construction engineering. Over the years, he developed several inventions while pursuing practical solutions for everyday challenges. His previous projects ranged from household products to engineering innovations designed for infrastructure maintenance.
Together with Prince Jose, he also presented another engineering invention focused on underground pipe repairs during technology events in the Gulf region. Their collaboration continues to center on practical innovations that improve infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
Looking ahead, the inventor continues developing new technologies, including a leak detection system designed to reduce water losses and improve efficiency. Meanwhile, the successful launch of the UV purification device represents another important step in Bahrain’s growing innovation sector. UV Water could offer households and businesses an effective solution for maintaining safer stored water while supporting cleaner and more sustainable water management
