Saudi Arabia Expands Stadler Train Order with $361 Million Deal for 10 Additional Passenger Trains

Saudi Railways is expanding its passenger transport network by ordering 10 additional intercity trains from Swiss manufacturer Stadler. The new agreement will strengthen connections between major Saudi cities and support the kingdom’s transport development plans. Furthermore, the deal includes additional maintenance services and adapts the trains to local operating conditions. The expansion reflects Saudi Arabia’s continued investment in railway infrastructure and domestic connectivity.

Saudi Arabia Railways exercised an option under its existing agreement with Stadler to purchase the additional trains. The company originally signed a $690 million contract in February 2024 for 10 passenger trains. However, the latest agreement adds another 10 trains and extends maintenance arrangements for a further $361 million. Consequently, the railway operator will double the number of trains covered by its passenger train order.

Each train will measure approximately 175 metres in length and accommodate up to 320 passengers. Stadler and Saudi Arabia Railways will coordinate development in Switzerland to meet the kingdom’s operational requirements. These requirements include extreme temperatures, desert conditions, and exposure to sand. Therefore, the trains will need to deliver reliable performance across Saudi Arabia’s challenging climate.

The new trains will serve the East-West railway line, connecting several important cities and industrial centres. The route includes Riyadh, Hofuf, Abqaiq, and Dammam. These connections support passenger movement between the capital and key locations in the kingdom’s eastern region. Moreover, improved railway services could provide travellers with another option for intercity transportation.

Stadler plans to begin producing the additional trains after completing the first 10 units. Production of the original order started in April 2026. Meanwhile, commercial passenger services using the trains are expected to begin during the second half of 2029. The additional order will help prepare the network for future passenger transport requirements.

Saudi Railways is also expanding its freight operations alongside passenger services. Last month, the company ordered 3,400 railcars through a separate $600 million agreement with US-listed Greenbrier Companies. The purchase aims to increase freight capacity and strengthen the country’s logistics infrastructure. Consequently, Saudi Arabia is developing both passenger and cargo transport capabilities.

The freight expansion also supports stronger links between seaports, cargo terminals, and neighbouring countries. Efficient rail connections can help businesses move goods across longer distances. Additionally, improved logistics infrastructure can support trade and industrial development. These improvements may help companies manage transportation needs more effectively.

Saudi Arabia’s railway investments form part of its broader effort to improve national connectivity. Passenger services can strengthen links between population centres, while freight railways support commercial distribution. Furthermore, expanded transport capacity could help businesses reach customers and suppliers across the kingdom. These developments also complement wider efforts to diversify economic activity.

The additional Stadler trains represent another step in Saudi Arabia’s long-term railway development. Their introduction will depend on production, testing, and preparations for commercial operations. Nevertheless, the expanded order signals continued investment in passenger transport and railway services. Saudi Railways will now work toward integrating the new trains into its future network operations.
