Sheikh Mohammed Reveals Why Trust Is the Currency of the Future for UAE Growth and Stability

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has identified trust as the future currency that will shape economic growth and stability. The UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Dubai Ruler shared his views on Sunday, October 11. His latest message comes from his new book, The Letters, which explores leadership and national development. Moreover, he explained why trust remains more valuable than emerging technologies and essential natural resources.

During a gathering with friends and government officials, Sheikh Mohammed discussed which resources would hold the greatest future value. Some participants suggested water because increasing global demand could intensify competition over limited supplies. Others highlighted artificial intelligence, pointing to its growing influence on industries and everyday life. Meanwhile, another participant selected energy because modern technologies require reliable power supplies.

However, Sheikh Mohammed presented a different perspective when participants asked him to share his opinion. He explained that the UAE considers public confidence its most important long-term asset. Although water, energy, artificial intelligence, and data remain essential, trust creates opportunities across these sectors. Furthermore, strong public confidence helps countries attract investors, international partnerships, and skilled professionals.

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that economic strength depends on more than financial indicators and technological progress. According to his message, investor confidence often weakens before financial markets experience major declines. Therefore, governments must establish credibility through consistent policies, transparent communication, and equal treatment under the law. Additionally, public trust encourages investors to maintain confidence during periods of uncertainty.

The Dubai Ruler also highlighted international findings that demonstrate the importance of government credibility. He referenced the 2026 Edelman Trust Index, which he said placed the UAE at the global forefront. Meanwhile, he cited OECD findings showing government trust averaging 39 percent across 30 countries. These comparisons reinforced his argument that confidence represents a major advantage for national development.

Furthermore, Sheikh Mohammed explained how trust influences public behavior during emergencies and difficult economic conditions. People respond more positively to official instructions when they believe authorities prioritize their safety. Similarly, businesses maintain stronger relationships with governments that demonstrate reliability and protect their interests. Consequently, maintaining public confidence supports both social stability and long-term economic resilience.

To illustrate his argument, Sheikh Mohammed recalled an incident during the recent confrontation between the United States and Iran. According to his account, a foreign government arranged evacuation flights for its citizens living in the UAE. However, many residents reportedly chose to remain in the country rather than leave. As a result, the government eventually canceled its evacuation arrangements after aircraft returned without passengers.

Sheikh Mohammed connected this decision to the confidence the UAE has developed over five decades. He explained that residents trusted the country’s ability to protect their families, businesses, and financial interests. Moreover, they believed the economy would remain resilient and normal conditions would eventually return. For this reason, he described public confidence as a lasting commitment between governments and communities.

The message also reflects the broader leadership principles Sheikh Mohammed explores throughout his latest publication. The Letters contains 26 messages addressing family members, government teams, citizens, and international audiences. Its themes include governance, justice, personal responsibility, ambition, and the challenges of building successful societies. Additionally, the collection draws on nearly six decades of his experience in public service.

The Arabic edition reached major UAE bookstores on October 1, while publishers plan the English release for October 15. Through personal experiences and leadership reflections, Sheikh Mohammed examines the foundations of effective government and national progress. His latest message presents trust as the future currency that can strengthen economies and attract global opportunities. Ultimately, he argues that lasting prosperity depends on protecting the confidence people place in their country’s institutions.
